About

Genevieve (Gen) Cece is a self-taught illustrator and multimedia artist from and based in Northern New Jersey. Since childhood she always felt a deep connection to nature and creativity, though became disconnected from a steady art practice for a number of years. However, in spring 2020, a newfound practice of meditation and mindfulness helped her rediscover her inner child, through which she began to embody presence, notice the simple joy in all things and embrace a sense of playfulness. This mindset transformed Gen's creative process and has become a key way that she communicates with the world.

In her illustration process, each piece Gen makes serves as a journal-like entry, often crafted in a portable sketchbook, whether in her bedroom studio or on the go. She favors the physical mediums of drawing with colored pencil, marker and pen, as well as linocut printmaking, painting and embroidery. Over the last few years, Gen has developed a unique world filled with original characters and whimsical landscapes that overflows with imagination and connectedness for all who encounter it. Her newer works carry a sense of steadfast hope and resilience, reflecting discoveries she has made while navigating challenges and embracing the unknown. Often, her discoveries from these experiences of inner transfomation are shared in her drawings via original heartfelt phrases, offering comforting wisdom to both herself and the viewer. Gen's work is here to remind you of what you already know—that you are a part of all things big and small in this universe, and that you are capable, loved and boundless.

Aside from working as a visual artist, Gen is a Montessori teacher and makes music under the alias Joyous Moon. In her free time, she loves diving into music and media from the past, adventuring to parks and gardens, and tending to her plants.
